1965 Honda CB77 Super Hawk Motorcycle Restoration

This vintage motorcycle sat for decades waiting for its chance to live again. I rebuilt this Super Hawk for my uncle, Vince. It was his brother's bike and he has dreamed of seeing it restored. He inquired. I accpeted the challenge. The Honda 305 engine was completely locked up and required a full top-end rebuild. From there, it was one piece at a time. Quite the process!

The Story

Vince & Myrna

This photo was taken in September 2021. Vince and Myrna stopped by to drop off his brother's CB77.

Here it is

It was mostly complete. Mufflers were shot. Engine was seized. It is what it is.

Strip Down

It was time to strip it down and get all the parts on a shelf. Every bolt cracked with little resistance.

One the sShelf

Fact: You can fit an entire vintage motorcycle on a set of shelves. Ask me how I know.

The Bottom

That bugger was seized up. Had to get creative to get that camshaft out of that motor. It turned into a thing.

Cleaning Up

One piece at a time. The 305 slowly came back together.

Parts, Parts, Parts

That's a lot of parts. There are a lot of parts to keep track of. Go slow and stay organized.

Original Paint

Shocked to find perfect original paint under the chrome side cover.

Rust, Rust, Rust

Can we save the rims? Got some EvapoRust involved in the situation. You'd be amazed what you end up with.

Put in the Time

Elbow grease is needed. Just gotta get after it. 0000 steel wool will get you a long way. Then polish with your favorite compound and finish.

The Frame

Having a small sand blasting setup is invaluable. One piece at a time.

Painting the Frame

Primer down.

Paint On

Will it match? I think I nailed it. PB-5 Chrysler Paint code is almost dead on with a gray primer.

The Bits

The frame is just the beginning. The bits add up.

Honda Cloud Silver

Thank goodness for boats.com. They have Honda Cloud Silver in a can.

Nitty Gritty

Time to cut through the grease. You gotta literally clean EVERY piece. Let's see what we got.

Assembly

Here we go. All the parts are pristine. Time to flip the switch on the ratchet.

Coming Together

Might as well polish every nut, both, and washer before you put it on. Don't forget the anti-seize or thread locker as appropriate.

The Tank

Not bad for a rattle can. Had to hide an easter egg.

Exhaust

Wanna spend 1200 bucks on mufflers? Nope. Let's fit some cool ones from off the shelf.

Polishing

Every single piece needs to be paid attention to. A clean part next to a dirty part doesn't work.
